What's in the Training?

Our SCBA training course is regulation compliant, and our online version fulfills classroom training requirements. Each class contains sections on understanding and inspecting equipment, safe operating procedures, and general rescue techniques.

This presentation includes intermittent practice quiz questions to prepare for the final written exam included with the course. In addition to the written exam, this course also includes a checklist for employers to use when administering a practical exam.

Though you will still need to familiarize yourself with all other applicable federal, state, provincial, territorial, and local standards, this training encompasses the following standards:

Canada Standards

  • CSA Z94.4-11—Selection, Use and Care of Respirators
  • CSA Z180.1-13—Compressed Air and Systems

Why Do I Need Training?

In line with regulations, anyone who operates an SCBA must receive training prior to operating the machine on their own. While requirements for refresher training are very specific, most safety trainings don’t have such specific requirements. However it’s wise to follow the same guidelines.. Most other equipment doesn’t have such specific requirements, but it’s wise to follow the same guidelines.

When it comes to refresher training, the standards in some instances (like forklifts) are very specific: operators must be re-evaluated every three years to see if they are still competent to operate the equipment. Best practices say to apply this same rule to all types of equipment. A so-called “free-pass” cannot be awarded based on experience, age, or time on the job. The extent of the evaluation is to be determined by the employer but should include a written and practical examination that prove continued competency.

Stay Informed On All Things

Did You Know?

Occupational respiratory hazards cause an estimated 381,000 new cancer cases in the US each year.

60% of employees who die in confined spaces are would-be rescuers.

More than 40% of fatalities among fire fighters are due to sudden cardiac death, which is greatly exacerbated by exposure to smoke and other oxygen-deficient atmospheres.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are SCBAs different from other respirators?

SCBAs are a form of air-supplying respirator. This means that they provide clean air to the user from an external storage tank, rather than purifying the surrounding air using a filter. SCBAs also have many unique parts, such as a regulator and full facepiece, which need to be inspected regularly and kept in working condition. Because they are generally more complex than other types of respirators, SCBAs require special training to use safely and effectively.

When are employees required to use SCBAs?

Employees must wear SCBAs whenever they are exposed to any atmosphere that is considered “Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health” (IDLH). These extremely harmful types of atmospheres are classified based on the presence of certain chemicals in hazardous concentrations. Air-purifying respirators typically don’t provide enough protection to be used in an IDLH atmosphere, which is why positive respiratory protection devices like SCBAs are mandatory.

What types of work are SCBAs used for?

SCBAs are most helpful in situations that require immediate action, and where the quality of the atmosphere cannot be quickly assessed. Firefighters commonly use SCBAs to rescue victims from burning buildings. SCBAs are also used by employees who must handle toxic materials, such as during a chemical spill or painting operation.
